Kerry Washington has been happily married to Nnamdi Asomugha for over a decade. The 47-year-old shared how she relished in her love for her then-fiancé while keeping the details of their relationship a secret.
The Bronx native said, “I used to pin my engagement ring to my undergarments because I loved my ring so much, so I would sleep in it at night, and then in the morning, I would pin it to my undergarments so that nobody knew we were engaged.”
The couple was experiencing enormous success in their respective careers at the time. Kerry had a hit TV show, and Nnamdi signed a record-breaking NFL deal. If they had announced their coupledom, the pair would have likely topped the paparazzi’s follow list.
“He had a groundbreaking, recording-breaking contract that he had just walked through and he had been in three or four Pro Bowls, you know,” Washington said.
She continued, “When I met him, he was on the cover of ‘Sports Illustrated,’ and I was on this hit show. It just felt like there was a lot of public energy around our careers, but we kept our relationship very private when we were dating.”
“I think mostly because we just wanted to protect ourselves and each other,” Kerry told Corden.
The couple married on June 24, 2013. They share three children: a daughter, Isabelle, born in 2014, and a son, Caleb, who was welcomed in 2016. Kerry is also a stepmom to Nnamdi’s teen daughter from a previous relationship.
Kerry’s Past Engagement
This wasn’t Washington’s first ring rodeo. She went through a public engagement with actor David Moscow.
After dealing with the public engagement and separation from October 2004 to March 2007, Kerry realized that going public wasn’t necessarily the best option. So, this time around, Kerry felt it was best to keep things secretive.
In her memoir, ‘Thick Than Water,’ Kerry discussed more of her life. The notoriously private actress openly shares her struggles with childhood trauma, an eating disorder, and battling suicidal thoughts.
Additionally, she shares how she learned her father was not biologically her dad. Kerry’s narrative was published on Sept. 26.
