Results of exit polls of 2024 Odisha Assembly Elections are set to be made live by various media organisations later this evening.Exit polls, a survey in which people are asked about their voting preference when the exit the polling booth after casting their votes, gives a good idea about the elections results in advance. The Election Commission of India had put an embargo on the publication of exit polls from April 19, 2024 (7 am) till June 1 (6:30 pm).

Assembly polls in Odisha were held simultenously with Lok Sabha polls this year in four phases on May 13, May 20, May 25, and June 1.

The counting of votes will be held on June 4.

Odisha has 147 assembly seats.There are three major parties in the state, but the contest is believed to be a bipolar one between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Biju Janata Dal (BJD). BJD is ruling the state since 2000.

2019 Odisha Assembly Results

In the 2019 Assembly polls, BJD secured a significant victory with 112 seats, with Naveen Patnaik becoming CM for the fifth consecutive time since 2000. Notably, in 2014, BJD had 117 seats.BJP, on the other hand, increased its tally to 23 from 10, securing 32.49 per cent votes. Congress, which once was a major party in the state, has been relgated to distant third with win in just nine seats, from 16 seats it won in 2014.

The Odisha CM is seeking re-election from his traditional Assembly seat of Hinjili as well as the newly chosen Kantabanji constituency.

In its election manifesto, the saffron party highlighted its achievements during its 10-year rule at the Centre, focusing on schemes for farmers and tribals. The BJD manifesto emphasized youth employment, support for the middle class, food security, and agriculture. Meanwhile, the Congress focused on addressing unemployment and called for a socio-economic and caste census.

During the campaigning, the saffron party has made the age of Naveen Patnaik a major poll issue. It has also accused Patnaik’s aide, V.K. Pandian, of grabbing power through the back door and constantly attacked him as an outsider, forcing the CM to issue a clarification that Pandian is not his successor and that he is in good health. The issue of Puri Jagannath temple was also a major issue, with the BJP accusing the ruling party of mismanagement.
