The stakes have skyrocketed on Slow Horses Season 4 Episode 4, and with only two episodes left, the big question on my mind is: who will make it out alive?

Harkness and his Terminator-like hitman are deadly, and it feels like no one is safe.

Even Jackson, the king of cool, seemed a little shaken by what he saw. He knows this is serious business — maybe the most dangerous game he’s ever played.

Whatever secrets are hidden at Les Arbres will tear Slough House and the Park apart — with or without Whelan and Flyte’s interference.

Taverner won’t be able to keep Whelan in check for long, and Flyte is a wildcard, hungry to prove herself. As for River? Well, River is just River, and I love him for it.

Let’s dive into “Returns!”

You Can’t Keep an Old Dog Down…Unless You’re the Terminator

David seems to be the only person who knows the full story about what really happened in Lavande and Les Arbres.

Chapman barely gave Lamb any details about his mission there—only that David sent him to extract a girl. He wasn’t privy to anything else. But who the girl was and what happened to her are important questions that must be answered.

One thing is clear, though: David wanted this girl badly enough to keep the entire operation secret for years. As the boss, he didn’t have to answer to anyone if he didn’t want to.

Whatever motivated David to take such a massive risk had to be huge. He traded cold bodies, weapons, and bombs just for a shot at getting this girl.

Yet, oddly enough, when Chapman didn’t deliver, David didn’t seem all that upset — or so Chapman says.

Chapman eventually lost his job, though, which suggests David was more concerned about burying a secret op than failing to find his target.

But the past has a way of catching up, and it’s coming back to haunt David — literally, in the form of the Westacres bombing.

As for Chapman, he unlikely survived his encounter with the Terminator-like hitman.

Even if he had been hitting the gym, it wouldn’t have helped him against someone that lethal, but Chapman was just trying to save face with his offhand remark.

“Bad Sam” might’ve been a force to reckon with back in the day, but now he’s clearly outmatched.

The real question is whether he’ll break under the hitman’s slow and brutal methods and spill David’s location. If he does, it will be a big problem, considering David is currently holed up with Lamb and the rest of the team.

Chapman’s moment of resolve — spitting in the hitman’s face — was bold, but it probably won’t last.

The hitman has nothing to lose. He either gets the information out of Chapman or becomes another victim of Harkness, who’s desperately trying to avoid the gruesome fate promised by the “man in the chair.”

And let’s be honest, Harkness does not want to end up paralyzed and chopped to pieces like his brutal client threatened.

With stakes this high, no one is safe, and danger is closing in on all sides.

What Is She Hiding?

You have to wonder why Taverner is so determined to keep those cold bodies buried. Does she know what David did, or is she just trying to shield MI5 from Whelan, who’s itching to go public with everything he (via Giti) digs up?

Taverner certainly didn’t see Whelan flipping the script on her. And while he might become her next “Ingrid,” it won’t be that easy. Whelan’s ambitious — just as hungry as Flyte — and now it’s clear he’s figured out Taverner’s game.

With Giti already uncovering another cold body, there’s no telling what else might surface. One thing’s for sure — she won’t stop digging if she knows there’s more to it.

Either that or David might reach someone important and spill everything, forcing Taverner to scramble to keep Whelan at bay.

In this case, transparency would blow MI5 wide open, and Taverner knows it — retirement might be her only option. And what would she do then?

Flyte also poses a serious risk. While Taverner claims to “like” her, we all know Diana doesn’t truly like anyone — she just uses people as pawns in her climb to First Desk. Lamb included.

Diana knows Lamb won’t help with the Cartwright situation, but if she can get to River (or David) first, she might be able to prevent the disaster Whelan will likely create if he beats her to it.

But the real question is whether Flyte will stay loyal to Taverner or go straight to Whelan.

It wouldn’t be shocking if she sided with him. After all, the Dogs left her alone in Cartwright’s house, and who knows what she had them report back?

Right now, Flyte’s the only one with direct access to River since she smartly stayed behind. Where she’ll go from here is still a mystery.

But one thing’s certain: if she manages to get any information out of River, she’ll use it to her advantage. Whether she withholds it or feeds bits and pieces to Taverner and Whelan, it’s bad news for everyone.

So Close, Yet No Cigar

I was so proud of River… but I should’ve known that feeling wouldn’t last. Sure, he managed to escape the Dogs on the train, but why he thought going back to his grandfather’s house was a smart move is beyond me.

His reason, of course, was to compare the pictures in his memory box with the ones he took at Les Arbres.

While we don’t know exactly what connection he’s seeing, it’s clearly a big one. Does the woman David was trying to extract have something to do with River?

And what’s with the eerie resemblance between Lockhead (Bertrand) and River? So many questions, but no answers yet.

Unfortunately for River, now he’s stuck dealing with Flyte. And seriously — why did he think it was safe to come out of his hiding spot? Did he hear two cars leave and think it was clear?

The only thing working in his favor is that Lamb knows he’s headed back to London.

There’s a chance Louisa might crash Flyte’s party, and wouldn’t that be perfect? Especially considering how furious Louisa is knowing that River faked his death. She’s definitely going to let him have it if she shows up.

With only two episodes of Slow Horses left, there’s no way we’re getting out of this season without someone dying. But who will it be?

Will Louisa fall in a showdown with Flyte? Will Harkness step in and finish David off before dementia does? Or will it be someone we never saw coming?

Hit the comments and let us know who you think we’ll say goodbye to on Slow Horses Season 4!
