YES!! Sugar has been renewed at Apple TV+.
If you haven’t noticed yet, the streamer takes big swings on screen.
Sometimes they work, and sometimes they don’t. But Apple’s deep pockets allow them to take chances you won’t find elsewhere on TV.
Sugar was one of the two best detective series to air in some time, and Apple TV+ has faith that the story can continue.
Colin Farrell is a very busy man. He’s currently playing Oz Cobb on the HBO series The Penguin, but he’s got enough energy and talent to star in two shows.
In the Apple TV+ series, Farrell plays John Sugar, a private detective who is incredibly compassionate toward his clients and everyone else.
He has an aversion to violence and will literally beg people not to force him to use force. Of course, by asking, his opponents always believe it must be due to his lack of physical prowess.
They couldn’t be more wrong.
You see, John Sugar isn’t just any private eye.
…SPOILER ALERT…
He’s also an alien.
Sugar Season 1 introduced us to John with unusual finesse. They kept that secret for most of the eight episodes by making us guess.
His keen empathy, brute force, and a mysterious substance he frequently used worked well to keep us on our toes.
The larger story reminded me of The Observers from Fringe. While The Observers were time travelers trying to understand the past, the Sugar aliens are from another planet and doing the same.
The season’s arc found John helping a wealthy patriarch (James Cromwell) find his missing granddaughter.
The overall mystery was a seething indictment of the superrich and how they coddle their own, allowing them to make the same mistakes over and over.
Another of Sugar’s unique skills is his ability to drink without getting drunk. That ability allowed him to help and befriend a woman named Melanie (Amy Ryan), who was personally involved in the case.
Sugar’s decision to take on the identity of a private investigator with a focus on missing persons came about because he lost his sister.
It haunts him to this day, and Sugar Season 1 Episode 8 set up the second season perfectly.
I won’t give away those details in this article, but rest assured, there is a viable and worthwhile path to launch another season. And frankly, Farrell can do just about anything.
The official logline for Sugar Season 2 says we will “see Sugar find himself back in Los Angeles taking on another missing person’s case, as he continues to look for answers surrounding his missing sister.”
I don’t need much more than that to know it’s going to be fantastic.
Those behind the scenes are also very excited for the upcoming season.
“It has been incredibly exciting to see audiences around the world embrace Sugar, and we are thrilled to return for a second season,” said executive producers Audrey Chon and Simon Kinberg.
“We’re so grateful to our partners at Apple for their support, our showrunner Sam Catlin, the brilliant Colin Farrell, and, of course, our viewers. We can’t wait to get John Sugar back on the case.”
“Since its premiere, audiences have been gripped by the mysteries and twists of Sugar, with an incredible performance by Colin Farrell at the center,” added Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+.
“Colin, Simon Kinberg, Audrey Chon, and the entire team behind this series have brilliantly blended genres to create a compelling, can’t-miss series that keeps viewers guessing, and we cannot wait to see where Detective John Sugar finds himself in season two.”
Because of how the season ended, it’s unclear just who will return other than Farrell. But I’d roll out the red carpet for the whole cast to return, even if it’s fun to imagine who might be introduced with a new case.
In addition to Farrell, Cromwell, and Ryan, Jason Butler Harner, Anna Gunn, Dennis Boutsikaris, Nate Corddry, Sydney Chandler, Alex Hernandez, and Kirby, formerly known as Kirby Howell-Baptiste, starred.
We do know that the Sugar series creator and Season 1 showrunner Mark Protosevich will pass the showrunning torch to Sam Caitlin, who will also executive produce.
For a long time, private investigators were the lifeblood of TV. Sugar and AMC’s Monsieur Spade reminded me of the genre’s brilliance.
Sugar’s renewal proves that I wasn’t alone in that thought.
Are you as excited as I am that Sugar will return? Let me know in the comments!
