A Kentucky mother has pleaded guilty to murdering her young children. She initially alleged that social media manipulation influenced her actions. In November 2023, Tiffanie Lucas shot her sons, Maurice Baker Jr., 6, and Jayden Howard, 9, at their home. They both later died at the hospital. PEOPLE reports that authorities subsequently arrested Lucas and charged her with the murders.

Details On Mother’s Charges In Tragic Shooting Involving Her Sons

Police arrested Tiffanie Lucas on November 8, 2023, after responding to a shooting on Bentwood Drive. Detective Richard Beahl testified that officers found Lucas collapsed in a neighbor’s yard. In the early investigation, Lucas allegedly told authorities that Facebook and the internet manipulated her into killing her children. She also purportedly claimed the incident was “an accident.”

Nearly a year after her sons’ deaths, Tiffanie Lucas pleaded guilty to two murder charges on Wednesday, October 23, per WHAS11. Lucas’ guilty plea comes a month after her lawyer filed a motion in court to consider an insanity plea, according to PEOPLE. The motion stated that the defense planned to present expert evidence on a mental condition at trial.

The defense’s reasons for changing course are unclear, but Maurice Baker and Jayden Howard’s family want Lucas to receive the maximum sentence.

“She should have to stay in prison,” Maurice’s aunt, Bobbie Baker, told reporters. “Give them some form of justice. They didn’t deserve this. They’re kids.”

Bobbie Baker also mentioned that the family allegedly contacted CPS about Lucas several times before she tragically killed her two sons.

“We called because her friends would call me and tell me that she was getting high and putting them in the shower at three in the morning,” Baker said. “Ice cold showers. And I called CPS, and they wouldn’t do anything.”

Judge Rodney Burress stated that Lucas pleaded guilty to charges carrying a potential sentence of 20 to 50 years each or even life. WHAS11 reports that Lucas will appear in court for sentencing on Nov. 22.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Bailey Taylor plans to recommend a higher sentence at next month’s hearing, according to WLKY.

“That’s what made it so tough, you had 2 kids completely innocent and their lives are snuffed out in a matter of seconds. It was a very tough case. I sympathize with the defendants and sympathize with the community because it was a horrible crime,” Taylor said.
