Among the favorites in this year’s major categories are A Complete Unknown, James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic featuring a freewheeling Timothée Chalamet; the singing, dancing, finger-squeezing Wicked adaptation starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo; and The Brutalist, Brady Corbet’s architectural epic with a score by former Yuck frontperson Daniel Blumberg.

This time last year, Barbenheimer dominated the Oscars nominations, with the dual release event of cinema executives’ dreams securing 20 nominations collectively. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer went on to sweep the 2024 main event, winning Best Picture; Best Director; Best Leading Actor for Cillian Murphy; and Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. Poor Things, another major contender that year, earned Emma Stone the Best Leading Actress award. In the music categories, Ludwig Göransson won Best Original Score for Oppenheimer, while Billie Eilish nabbed Barbie its sole statuette for her Best Original SongWhat Was I Made For?

This year’s music shortlists featured Bryce Dessner’s Sing Sing—also a Best Picture contender—Blumberg’s The Brutalist, and Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ Challengers in the Best Original Score category, as well as Elton John and Brandi Carlile, Kneecap, Reznor and Ross, and Pharrell Williams in Best Original Song.
