Using the app is simple. It only plays music when you’re walking or running. If you stop for any reason, the music stops as well.

Along with the great premise is a fun, retro interface. The app turns your iPhone screen into an-old school cassette player with the song playing “written” on screen. You can even hear cassette sounds before the songs starts.

When walking, a Live Activity will begin so you can quickly see your step count and distance on the iPhone lock screen or Apple Watch. The app is also integrated with Game Center offering achievement and leaderboards.

The app is also compatible with Shortcuts so you can start and stop walking sessions.

You can currently use tracks from Apple Music, purchased iTunes tracks, iTunes Match music library, personal music loaded onto a device via the Apple Music app, Apple Podcasts, and Apple Books audiobooks.

Only for the iPhone, WalkStar is a free download now on the App Store. There is an optional WalkStar Premium subscription.

Subscribers can view historical step and walk data and unlock additional custom themes and icons. It’s available for $1.99 per month or $9.99 yearly.

The monthly subscription comes with a 7-day free trial while the yearly option offers a 14-day free trial.
