The Supreme Court on Monday came down heavily on DMK politician and Tamil Nadu minister Udhayanidhi Stalin for his comments on Sanatana Dharma, and said that as a minister he should know the consequences of what he says.

“You are not a layman. You are a minister. You should know the consequences,” SC told Stalin‘s lawyer.

“You abuse your rights under freedom of speech and expression and right to freedom of religion and then come to Supreme Court for protection under Article 32?” the apex court asked the lawyer.

Stalin moved apex court seeking clubbing of multiple FIRs registered against him in several states over his remarks.

The apex court has adjourned the plea for hearing on March 15.

Udhayanidhi Stalin on Sanatana Dharma

Stalin’s sharp comments against Sanatana Dharma led to a nation-wide uproar, as the son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin compared it to a disease.

“What is Sanatanaam? The very name is only from Sanskrit. Sanatana is against equality and social justice and nothing else. What is the meaning of Sanatana? It is eternal, that is, it cannot be changed; no one could pose any question and that is the meaning.” Sanatana divided people on the basis of caste, he alleged.

He further said, “Few things cannot be opposed, that should be abolished only. We can’t oppose Dengue, Mosquitoes, Malaria, or Corona, we have to eradicate this that’s how we have to eradicate Sanatana. Rather opposing Sanatana it should be eradicated.”

Following heavy criticism from Opposition parties which accused him of inciting genocide, he said that uprooting Sanatan Dharma is upholding humanity and human equality.

“I never called for the genocide of people who are following Sanatan Dharma. Sanatan Dharma is a principle that divides people in the name of caste and religion. Uprooting Sanatan Dharma is upholding humanity and human equality,” Udhayanidhi Stalin wrote in a message on X in September 2023.
