With many parts of India reeling under a prolonged heatwave, the online food delivery platform Zomato has made a special appeal to its customers, urging them to avoid ordering food during peak afternoon hours unless absolutely necessary. This request, posted on X (formerly Twitter), has generated a range of reactions from netizens.“Pls avoid ordering during peak afternoon unless absolutely necessary,” Zomato posted.

Some users, questioned the practicality of this request, pointing out that lunchtime orders cannot be postponed to dinner time and suggesting that Zomato should be responsible for identifying which orders are truly necessary.

Others were more critical who argued that if Zomato genuinely cared about its delivery workers, it would halt services during the hottest part of the day rather than asking customers to limit their orders.

Some netizens supported the notion that people generally order food out of necessity or emergency. They suggested practical measures like ordering from nearby restaurants to make pickups and deliveries quicker, and ensuring delivery personnel have water and are given more time for deliveries due to the heat.However, one post from a netizen stood out. Tagging Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal, he suggested the food delivery platform providing delivery personnel’s two-wheelers with a type of roof or shade, which he claims costs around Rs 800 . After his post, many netizens enquired where they can get the Rs 800 roof for two-wheelers.

However, netizen offered a more skeptical view, asserting that most food orders are driven by cravings rather than necessity. He estimated that 90% of orders are placed because people feel like eating a particular dish, which, in his opinion, justified Zomato’s plea to customers.

Overall, while some appreciated Zomato’s concern for its delivery workers, others felt the company should take more decisive action or found the request impractical given the nature of food delivery services.
